What is Short Term Health Insurance?

Short-term insurance, as the name suggests, provides coverage for a limited period, filling gaps when you don't have a more permanent insurance plan. While there are different types, it's most commonly associated with health insurance for temporary coverage needs.  ​

Things to Know About Short Term Insurance

  • Temporary coverage: It is designed to provide coverage for a short time, like between jobs, during open enrollment periods, or while waiting for other coverage to start.
  • Limited benefits: Short-term plans typically offer less comprehensive coverage than regular health insurance, often excluding essential health benefits like maternity care, mental health services, and pre-existing conditions.
  • Lower premiums: The cost of short-term insurance is often lower than comprehensive health insurance plans due to the limited coverage and lack of compliance with Affordable Care Act (ACA) guidelines.
  • Not ACA-compliant: Short-term plans do not meet the requirements of the ACA and are not subject to the same regulations, such as guaranteed issue and coverage for pre-existing conditions.
  • Can be medically underwritten: Insurers may require applicants to answer medical questions and can deny coverage based on health history, unlike ACA plans.
  • Flexible terms: Coverage periods can vary, but generally range from a few months up to a year, and can sometimes be renewed up to a maximum duration, which is federally limited to four months, including renewals, for plans issued after September 1, 2024. 
When might short-term insurance be useful?
  • Bridging employment gaps: If you're between jobs and need temporary health coverage.
  • Missing open enrollment: If you missed the open enrollment period for ACA plans and need some coverage.
  • Waiting for other coverage to begin: While waiting for your new employer's health insurance or Medicare coverage to start.
  • Specific situations: If you need proof of insurance for a specific activity or trip, or to cover your children temporarily.
